Fixtures too far apart leave dark patches; too close, and the ceiling looks busy, and placed carelessly, they glare on a television or shadow a countertop. We plan spacing to the ceiling height, align fixtures with the room and work surfaces, and consider where you actually need light before we cut a hole. We even ask about your furniture, because a light perfectly spaced on paper can still land right over the television.

The wiring and switching done right

Recessed lighting is an electrical job, not a decorating one. New fixtures often mean new circuits or careful additions to existing ones, switch and dimmer changes, and connections that must be safe and accessible. We handle the wiring properly, add the right switching and dimming, and confirm the circuit can carry the load. Overloading an existing lighting circuit is a common do-it-yourself mistake, so we check what the circuit can carry rather than tapping into the nearest junction box.

Clean cuts and neat patching

Adding recessed lights to an existing ceiling means cutting into drywall, and a careful electrician makes that nearly invisible. We measure and cut precisely, fish wiring through the ceiling with minimal openings, and patch any access holes cleanly. Per-fixture and per-room

Cost scales with the number of fixtures, the wiring involved, and whether we are working in an open ceiling or fishing through an existing one. A handful of canless LEDs in a room with attic access is among the more affordable improvements we do, while a whole-home layout is a larger project. Doing several rooms in one visit is the most efficient way to price it, since adding the next room costs less per fixture than a separate trip.

What moves the price

Ceiling access, ceiling height, whether new circuits are needed, the fixtures and trims you choose, dimming, and how much patching is involved all move the number. A home with an accessible attic, which many homes here have, is generally easier and less expensive to light than one with a finished floor above. When there is a bedroom or a second story over the ceiling we are lighting, the wiring has to be fished more carefully, and patching increases, which we account for honestly in the estimate rather than discovering it mid-job.

For most recessed lighting projects, we provide a written estimate up front so you know the full cost before we begin. Smaller add-ons carry our standard service pricing. Either way, you get a clear number and a recommendation on fixture count and placement rather than an upsell. If fewer, well-placed fixtures will light the room better than a ceiling packed with them, we will tell you that, because a good layout is about placement, not quantity.

Older ceilings that canless LED transforms

Much of the housing here is mid-century brick ranches and colonials with dated flush-mount fixtures and sometimes textured ceilings. Canless LED wafer lights are made for exactly these homes, installing in a shallow ceiling through a small hole with no bulky housing above. We retrofit recessed LED into these older ceilings to modernize a room without a full remodel, working carefully around textured ceilings so the finish stays intact. It is often far cheaper than the renovation people assume they need.

Humidity means damp- and wet-rated fixtures

Our coastal climate is humid year-round, and bathrooms, showers, laundry rooms, and covered porches see real moisture. Recessed fixtures in those spots need to be damp- or wet-rated, and a shower in particular requires a wet-location fixture, or moisture can work into the housing and shorten its life. We select the correct rating for each location so your lighting holds up in a home here rather than fogging, corroding, or failing early.

Insulation and energy in a cooling climate

Homes here run air conditioning much of the year, and a recessed fixture that is not airtight leaks conditioned air straight into the attic, working against your cooling and inviting condensation. Spacing and layout math

Even comfortable light comes from real spacing math, not eyeballing. We factor ceiling height into fixture spacing, keep lights off of walls by the right margin to avoid scalloping, align them to islands, counters, and seating, and place them to avoid glare on screens. The result is a room that is bright where you need it and soft where you do not, which is the whole point of planning the layout before the first hole is cut.

IC-rated and airtight housings

Where a fixture sits in an insulated ceiling, it must be insulation-contact rated so it can be covered safely without overheating, and an airtight housing keeps conditioned air from leaking into the attic. Using a non-IC fixture against insulation is a fire risk, and a leaky one is an energy and moisture problem. We install the correct housings for each ceiling, which is a code detail and an efficiency detail that a decorator-minded installer overlooks.

Dimming and driver compatibility

LED flicker and buzz almost always come from a dimmer that is not matched to the fixture's driver, and it is the most common complaint we are called to fix in recessed lighting. We pair dimmers rated for the specific LED fixtures, confirm smooth dimming across the full range, and eliminate the flicker before we leave.
