Will a Standby Generator Fit Between Your House and the Next One?
A side yard between two older Portsmouth houses can be narrower than a generator plus the open space it needs at each end. One operable window on that wall can rule out the most obvious spot, and a deck or exterior stair can rule out the next one. Here are the minimum clearances Generac publishes for its home standby units:
Generac bases those distances on the NFPA 37 fire-safety standard, and local codes take precedence over them. Generac’s own guidance adds that meeting the fire distances does not by itself keep exhaust out of a house, so we also look at where exhaust would drift, including toward a neighbor’s windows a few feet across the property line, and where roof runoff sends water.
03 — The Battery Alternative
When a Battery Fits a Small Portsmouth Lot Better
A standby generator burns fuel, so it has to live outdoors on a pad with open space around it. A Tesla Powerwall mounts on a wall or on the floor, makes no exhaust, and, when installed for backup, takes over automatically when the grid drops.
A battery still has placement rules, such as staying 3 feet from doors and windows when mounted outside, but those are far easier to meet in a narrow side yard. On a lot where no generator location clears the distances, that difference can decide the whole project.
The tradeoff is endurance. A generator keeps running as long as it has fuel, while a battery runs on stored energy, so it is sized to power the circuits you want to keep running through an outage.

04 — Sound Limits
Portsmouth’s Sound Limits Are Measured at the Property Line
Portsmouth’s noise ordinance (City Code Section 24-255) measures sound at the property line, on the neighbor’s side. As adopted in 2009, and still the section the city’s code points to for sound limits, it sets the residential limit at 55 dBA overnight, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and 65 dBA during the day. The ordinance does not list home standby generators among its exceptions, so the city answers questions about a specific case.
Generac rates its 20 to 24 kW Guardian units at 67 dB(A) under normal load and 55 to 57 dB(A) during their quieter low-speed exercise, measured 23 feet from the front. Generac notes that readings from the other sides may be higher, depending on the installation.
The two numbers are measured differently, so they are not a pass-or-fail test. On a narrow lot, they still shape the plan: which side of the unit faces the neighbor, how far the pad sits from the property line, and what time of day the exercise runs.
05 — Natural Gas
Room on the Gas Meter for One More Appliance
Generac lists its 24 kW Guardian at about 306 cubic feet of natural gas an hour at full load. That demand comes on top of a gas furnace, water heater, or range already on the meter, so whether the existing meter and gas service can accommodate it is a question to be settled with Virginia Natural Gas before the unit is ordered.
In Virginia, natural gas piping is licensed gas-fitting work. Castles does the electrical side of the installation, and the gas line itself is run and connected by a partner plumbing company that we bring in and schedule around our own work. The generator arrives with a short flexible connector for that final hookup, and the unit’s fuel figures go to the plumber from us.

A walk around the house before any quote
We check the clearances, the route from the gas meter or propane tank, and the electrical service, and we note anything that would be visible from the street.
Load calculation and unit choice
We list the circuits you need during an outage and size the generator and transfer switch to it, whether that is the whole home or a set of essential circuits.
Permit and any district question
We pull the electrical permit, the partner plumbing company handles the fuel-side paperwork, and the district question is settled before the pad and unit are ordered.
Install, inspection, and walk-through
We set the unit, wire the transfer switch, and show you the exercise schedule and status lights after inspection.
