Lighting Installation in Suffolk, VA

Before Suffolk will investigate a new streetlight, its security street lighting policy requires at least six residences within 1,200 feet and a petition signed by at least 75 percent of the residents whose property borders the area. Even where a streetlight qualifies, it lights the road. The light at the end of the driveway, over the barn door, or along the walk to a detached garage is the homeowner’s to provide.

So a lighting plan out here starts at the property line and works inward, and the free installation estimate lists each area separately.

01 — Suffolk Conditions

Lighting a Property the Streetlights Don’t Reach

What the city policy covers

Under the policy, streetlights go on public streets. It also says plainly that some light from a streetlight will spill onto private property and that no shielding or shading will be authorized to stop it.

A co-op or utility pole light

In the rural parts of Suffolk it serves, Community Electric Cooperative runs an outdoor lighting program. The co-op furnishes and installs a light at a location suitable to both parties, makes the connections, and powers it, and the fixture has a dusk-to-dawn sensor.

The power for that light does not run through the member’s meter; the co-op maintains it, and members report problems using the light’s Light Number. The co-op replaces older mercury vapor units with LED when they need a new ballast, and high-pressure sodium units when the whole light needs replacing.

Dominion Energy also offers outdoor lighting. A utility light belongs to the utility, so installing, moving, or repairing it is a call to the co-op or Dominion. The lights we install are yours, on your own circuits, and many rural properties use both.

Driveways, yards, and outbuildings

On acreage, the useful light is usually at the driveway entrance, the walk from the car to the door, the barn or shop entry, and the yard corners that stay dark. The table below matches a fixture and control to each.

Landscape lighting on a bigger yard

Low-voltage landscape lighting runs from a transformer, and on a long yard, the fixtures farthest from it can appear dimmer than the rest. We size the transformer and cable for the actual layout, keep splices in weatherproof connectors, and bury the cable where it will not be cut by mowing or edging.

When an existing landscape system goes dark

Older yard lighting tends to fail in predictable places: corroded connectors, wet underground splices, an overloaded transformer, or a dead photocell. We trace the run from the transformer outward, repair or replace what failed, and tell you whether the system is worth keeping or rebuilding.

03 — Underground Runs

How Deep the Wire Goes to a Lamppost, Gate Light, or Shop

The burial table in the national electrical and residential codes Virginia builds on sets minimum cover for underground wiring. Cover is measured from the top of the cable or conduit to finished grade, so the trench itself runs a little deeper than the number. The right depth depends on the wiring method and where the run crosses.

Wiring method
Minimum cover in the yard
Under your own driveway
Direct-burial cable
24 inches
18 inches
Nonmetallic conduit listed for direct burial
18 inches
18 inches
120-volt circuit, 20 amps or less, GFCI protected
12 inches
12 inches
Landscape lighting at 30 volts or less
6 inches
18 inches

Under public streets, roads, and alleys, every method needs 24 inches. A listed low-voltage lighting system’s instructions may allow its cable to run shallower than 6 inches, while the line-voltage feed to its transformer runs in the deeper rows.

For a single lamppost or gate light, a GFCI-protected 120-volt circuit is often the practical choice, and we pick the method for each run.

04 — Sensors

When a Dusk-to-Dawn Light Stays On All Day or Blinks at Night

A photocell switches a fixture by reading daylight, and most complaints come from where the sensor sits. A light that stays on in daytime usually has a sensor that is dirty, blocked, or shaded, such as one under a deep eave, inside a covered porch, or behind a tree that has leafed out. Cleaning it and giving it open sky is the first step.

A light that shuts off at night or blinks is often seeing light from somewhere else: a floodlight on the same wall, a neighbor’s light, or its own beam reflecting back onto the sensor from light siding or a metal door. Re-aiming the fixture, moving the sensor, or shielding it usually settles it. A light that never comes on gets its power checked before the sensor is replaced.

One fixture maker suggests a quick test: cover the sensor with black tape or a dark cloth, and if the light comes on, the sensor works. A light that keeps flickering after its connections are checked, since loose wiring causes flicker too. On a shop or barn wall with a photocell, a timer, and a motion light together, we set each control for its own area so they stop fighting each other.

05 — Warm Light

Warmer Outdoor Light for Yards Near the Swamp and Woods

The Great Dismal Swamp, which borders Suffolk, is a national wildlife refuge of nearly 113,000 acres, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service calls it some of the most important wildlife habitat in the mid-Atlantic region. It is home or a stopover for about 96 species of butterflies, 200 birds, and 47 mammals. Many rural yards here back onto woods, fields, and water where night insects gather at lights.

The Service’s advice for outdoor lighting is to use warmer bulbs of no more than 3000 kelvins, keeping blue-violet light down, and to control lights with motion detectors, timers, or dimmers so they are on only when needed. It cites a study in which about 62 percent fewer insects visited plants in a meadow lit by LED streetlamps than in one lit by the moon.

For porches, barn entries, and landscape lights, that points to warm white fixtures or lamps and motion sensors on approach lights, with all-night lighting kept to what is needed. We list the color temperature and control for each fixture on the estimate.

06 — FAQS

Suffolk Lighting FAQs

Do I need an electrician for landscape lighting?+

Not for a plug-in low-voltage kit on an existing outdoor GFCI outlet. A new outdoor outlet, a hardwired transformer, or line-voltage fixtures are line-voltage electrical work that we handle, with a permit where required.

How far can a barn light run from the house panel?+

It depends on the load and the distance. The feeder or circuit to the barn is sized so voltage holds up over the distance, the building gets its own disconnect, and the outside lights are switched there or by a sensor.

Can one barn light use both a motion sensor and a photocell?+

Yes. Many motion-sensor floodlights have a built-in photocell, so the motion feature only switches the light on after dark. Some also offer a dim setting that stays on all night and brightens when motion is detected.

Can the yard lights be controlled from one place?+

Yes. Exterior lights can be grouped on a switch at the back door, a photocell, or a timer, and some can run on smart switches.

Can you replace old fluorescent fixtures in my garage with LEDs?+

Yes. We replace the fixtures or convert them to LED. Tube fixtures converted by bypassing the ballast are rewired and labeled for the tube type, following the lamp maker’s instructions.
